CLUB RUN REPORTS 2012
May 13th
6 riders left townend for the clubrun to Misterton. This included the return of Paul (Fausto Coppi) Ruta fresh from his Italian training base. We were met on Wombwell bypass by Barney. At Harworth, Gary Laight turned for home with a niggling knee injury. The rest carried on making good use of the strong tailwind. On arrival at the cafe we were met by The Guv'nor Mr George Miles who was already tucking in to his coffee and teacake. We departed from the cafe not relishing the prospect of the headwind home. Just out of Conisbrough Barney picked up a puncture but after a quick change we set off again and arrived back in Barnsley after a tough but enjoyable ride.
May 6th
A cold but sunny morning greeted 6 riders at Townend for the hilly ride to Bakewell. The roads were a lot quieter due to our earlier start of 8.30, en route we were joined at Birdwell by Barney who tagged on the back. A steady pace was set all the way to Bakewell and on arrival we were spoiled for choice with the numerous cafe's. Lunch was taken and as we were about to depart Barney noticed he had a flat tyre so a quick repair and off we set. The ride back was into a slight headwind and Barney had is first taste of the infamous Froggat... the look on his face told us it wasn't his favourate climb. Arrived back home safe and sound after a nice day in Derbyshire.
April 29th
No-one turned up at townend for todays ride to Howden, probably had something to do with the terrible weather all week and the "months worth of rain" predicted to descend from the heavens during the course of the day. Wise move people...
April 22nd
Only 4 riders turned up at townend for the hilly ride to Hebden Bridge, for those members who didn't turn up (smart move). We departed in cool damp conditions with thick clouds up above. At Darton we were joined by Neil M, as we got to West Bretton we discussed the chances of getting to our destination without getting wet. Not much luck as we got to Flockton the day turned to night and the heavens opened, at this point we put on our rain jackets and took a sharp left to Emley. Unfortunately Neil M got detached and missed our left turn, he carried on a few miles before turning for home. The 4 damp squibs carried on for home soaked to the skin. Definitely a character building ride.
April 15th
It was a sunny but chilly morning that greeted 9 riders at townend. We departed for Lound near Retford with a strong tailwind which contributed to a brisk pace. At Stairfoot we were joined by Rich Dean and at Wombwell bypass we were joined by new member Barney Sanders. We arrived at the cafe in good time where lunch was taken, even Paul Ruta dug deep and bought a cuppa. The club was then joined by Sir George Miles. Zoe wasn't the only bird out with plenty of chelp, the caged Parrot had plenty to say as we passed it to use the toilets. We then departed for home into a strong headwind which made for a tough return leg. At Stainton we had to take a small detour due to the road being closed. A quick puncture repair for Rich at Conisborough and we were off again arriving home in good time.
Sunday 8th
A cool cloudy morning greeted 7 riders at townend for the ride to Otley, this included Gary and Zoe fresh from their majorcan training camp with another 500+ miles under their belts. Neil Mountain turned up sporting a brand new carbon road bike, an early wedding present to himself! Off we set and picked up new member Julian West at Staincross. A good ride was had to Otley with the traffic being noticeably lighter due to it being Easter Sunday. Neil Mountain turned back after 30mile as he was still recovering from a recent illness. Lunch was taken at the cheapest cafe in West Yorkshire with Dek going for his usual pie, chips and peas but no pudding. Set off back with darkening skies and a slight tailwind but luckily the rain held off. A big well done to new member Julian on his first ever BRC clubrun.
April 1st
Only 4 riders met at townend for the hilly ride to Marsden. On a cold frosty morning they departed into a slight headwind. The cafe was a welcome sight after a tough outward leg although Paul Ruta decided not to stop and rode straight round. Lunch was taken and then departed for home in slightly easier conditions.
March 25th
8 riders met at townend for the hilly ride to Edale Derbyshire this included new lad Barney Sanders. Off we set in foggy cool conditions, Neil Dyson banking on the sun breaking through as he turned up in armwarmers and shorts. At Grenoside he got his wish as the fog lifted to reveal bright sunshine. A nice steady ride was had to the cafe, taking in the sunny picturesque views. Paul Ruta decided not to stop as he had to get home to get puddings in!!Lunch was taken at Edale, new lad Barney must have been impressed with the club as he got out his £6 and made himself a member. On our return leg just after Hope we were met by Mr G Thawley who had not turned up at Town end due to poor visibility out of his bedroom window and decided to climb back into bed. A good ride home in very warm sunshine. A big well done to Barney on his first ever clubrun.
March 18th 50 mls in 4 hrs
A cool cloudy morning greeted the 10 riders at townend for the 50 miles in 4 hours reliability ride. Off we set into a slight headwind and the roads still wet from the nights heavy downpour. At Cudworth bridge we were joined by Rich Dean and the Bucko brothers Mathew and John (the other disciples couldn't make it). Just before Birkin Dek picked up the only puncture of the day, a super fast pit stop and we were on our way. On arrival at the cafe at Osgodby we were met by the governor Mr George Miles, lunch was taken then off we set for the return leg. Having only travelled 100 yds we had an emergency stop due to Dave Vingoe riding into the back of Mark Summerfield. A quick checkover and off we set again this time with a nice tailwind which contributed to a brisk pace. The 50 mile mark was reached in ample time and arrived back home in sunshine. Well done everyone.
Riders were:- Gary Barnes, Zoe Blackburn, Gary Thawley, Neil Mountain, Neil Dyson, Rich Dean, Mark Summerfield, Dave Vingoe, Paul Ruta, Wayne Randall, Derek Crawshaw. Guest riders: Matt and John Buckingham.
March 11th
11 riders met at townend for the hilly ride to Glossop, this included new lad Adam who had travelled all the way from Kent to come on our infamous club run. Well not quite he's stopping at Gateway Plaza. We departed in cool sunny conditions and into a slight headwind. At our usual wee wee stop up Rivelin we were joined by another rider who asked if he could tag on with us to Glossop. Just after Ladybower we passed the GB mountain bike team preparing for their days training, their tongues hanging out in awe of our speeding peleton. The top of Snake Pass was a bit cool especially on the fast descent. Lunch was taken at Glossop then off we set for the return leg with a slight tailwind and in beautiful sunshine. Arrived back in Barnsley after a nice day in the sun.
March 4th
A cold and rainy morning greeted the one and only BRC member who braved these miserable conditions. Wayne Randall turned out in poor conditions for the 50 mls in 4 hrs reliability ride. He made the decision to cancel the event instead opting for a shorter ride and arriving back home well and truly soaked. But happy in the knowledge that he had gained a point in the battle for the club run trophy. Well done Wayne.
The 50 mls in 4 hrs will be arranged for a future date.
February 26th
Cloudy and cool conditions greeted 6 riders at townend for the hilly ride to Halifax. Wayne Randall turning up on his best bike saying he needed all the help he could get. So off we set into a slight headwind and arrived at the Historic Piece Hall as used in the film Brassed Off. After lunch was taken the Barnsley war cry of "AR MUCH" could be heard for miles, as it was discovered there was a charge of 20p for the use of the toilets. Mark Summerfield dug deep and pulled out a 20p the rest of us using our feet as a doorstop. We then departed with a slight tailwind and arrived home after an enjoyable day.
February 19th
Ten riders met at townend for the hilly ride to Calver in Derbyshire. We departed in cloudy and cool conditions. As we started to climb Rivelin Gary Laight decided he was going to turn back at the top as his knee was sore so he sent us on our merry way. We arrived at this popular cafe and just managed to get seated. Paul Ruta didn't stop and carried straight on for home. After lunch was taken we departed and within a few hundred yards we hit the slopes of Col de Frogget, a good pace being set by Gary Thawley. As we approached Wortley on our way home we caught up with G Laight who had decided to carry on and go to Hope instead. Arrived back home after an enjoyable ride.
February 12th
Tropical conditions greeted 14 riders at townend, well thats what it felt like compared to recent sub zero temperatures. This included a guest appearance from Kev Brown and also BRC leg-end Dave Vingoe. After a couple of miles shock and amazement rippled through the peleton as it was noticed that Pencil was on the SMALL ring this was due to a mechanical and not through choice. At Brierley Kev Brown took a right and headed home. Just outside Norton we had a puncture stop "GUESS WHO" yes it was Neil Dyson and his puncture proof tyres. A quick change and we were off again with a good tempo being set on the Sykehouse Road. Lunch was taken at Too Hoots cafe near Carlton (Snaith). We then departed for the return leg but having only travelled a few miles we had another puncture stop (no prizes for guessing who) yep Neil Dyson. Rich, Matt and Paul carried on as the smell of puddings was in the air. The rest of us followed on after a quick repair, with an enjoyable ride home.
PS; Pencils legs are still spinning.
February 5th
3 riders met at townend for the ride to Lotherton Hall (Posh and Becks of Broadway and Dek the destroyer). It was decided to go to Askern instead via Pontefract Knottingley and A19 staying on the main roads. So off we set in cold damp conditions, the roads were fine till we got to Brierley where the roads turned to strips of tarmac. We carried on taking a right onto Hemsworth bypass where the tarmac strips got narrower and in places totally covered (snow drifts 18ft high) so we pulled over and attached our snow ploughs and as we contemplated our next move a polar bear crossed our path. That was it decision made we turned round and headed back for home. Back so early that my Contador steak hadn't defrosted. But on the plus side we did manage to claw back a point in the battle for the clubrun trophy. (Watch your back Wayne).
January 29th
A cold crisp morning greeted 11 riders at townend for the clubrun to Oldcotes. We were joined at stairfoot by Rich Dean who tucked in at the back resting his legs after his epic 90 mile ride the day before. At the top of Conisbrough hill the club were joined by Andrew (Mexbrough mountain goat). Approaching Tickhill we had a pit stop for Neil Dyson to mend his puncture then off we set. We arrived at the cafe where we were joined by Paul Ruta who had made his own way there recovering from a recent illness. Lunch was taken then the 14 riders departed for home, at Wombwell Neil Mountain and Chris Frances decided to do a George Miles loop making the most of their Sunday pass.
January 22nd
The phrase "character building ride" seems to be used more often than not on recent clubruns and today was no exception. 4 riders left townend for the short ride to Rothwell. The outward leg was aided by a strong side/tailwind until we took a left at Castleford then it became a block headwind with gusts of up to 200mph, ride speed dropping to 10mph on the flat. We arrived at the cafe looking like we had done the 150m in 12hrs. Lunch was taken, Wayne going for the bacon sarnie instead of his usual beans on toast, saying he'd eaten beans and mushy peas the day before(not the same meal tho) which explains the fierce wind. The return leg was slightly easier with a mainly side wind. Arrived back bruised and battered.
January 15th
Six riders arrived at town end in arctic conditions. After discussing how crackers we all were we still set off for Hope in Derbyshire. Dustpan and brush were needed to sweep up body parts that had frozen and snapped off. Not much talking more teeth chattering. Arrived at the cafe to be welcomed by a roaring log fire. Martin Dainty did his usual trick, ordering more food than he could pay for and taking advantage of Pencils new role as treasurer and tapping him for £1.25!! We eventually dragged ourselves away from the fire for the cold ride home. I wouldn't say an enjoyable but more of a character building ride.
January 8th
Six riders left townend in mild conditions for the ride to Askern. They were assisted with a slight tailwind on the outward leg. On arrival at the cafe they were greeted by George M. Lunch was taken then off they set for the return leg. George waited at the cafe for the arrival of Kath G and her 2 friends, they had just missed the clubrun.
CLUB RUN REPORTS 2011
November 20th Sunday
It was a damp, foggy morning that greeted the 7 riders at town end, which included new rider Chris, one of Neil M's friends. Off we set with our lights blazing engulfed in thick fog! As we approached Hillsborough the fog miraculously lifted revealing blue skies and sunshine for the ascent of Rivelin. New boy Chris got his first telling off for upping the pace up Rivelin. We arrived at the cafe but disappointment greeted those wanting hot food as there was a 30 minute waiting time so we all opted for coffee and cake! We left the cafe climbing straight up out of Hathersage and up onto Ringinglow taking in some picturesque views. On arrival back to Barnsley we once again headed back into the fog which hadn't lifted all day.
November 13th Sunday
It was agreed at the club dinner to change the clubrun to the flat Askern run due to the likelihood that most of the clubrunners would be suffering from slight hangovers. As it turned out this proved to be a good move due to the drizzle and generally miserable conditions, but this didn't deter 7 riders from turning up at townend. We departed in damp and foggy conditions. As we got into our stride on the Cudworth bypass Pencil picked up the first puncture of the day. A quick change and we were back on our way. On the A19 just approaching Askern Zoe picked up the second puncture of the day. She fluttered her eyelashes at Pencil which was enough for him to mend her puncture!! We arrived at the cafe with George already there, having done a massive 7miles on his birthday (HAPPY 69TH GEORGE)!! After lunch we departed for home and at Burghwallis Dek picked up the 3rd and final puncture of the day, he fluttered his eyelashes at Pencil, but to no avail. Arrived back in Barnsley abit damp and mucky!
November 6th Sunday
7 riders left town end on a cool but sunny morning. No sooner had we reached Hoyle Mill when we crossed paths with BRC's "Dawn Raiders" returning from their secret mission! A good ride was had to the cafe, albeit with a slight headwind. Lunch was taken amongst the hundreds of leather clad motorbikers at Sherburn in Elmet. Dek and Wayne opted for the chips, cornish pasty and mushy peas, god bless their bellies!! The return leg was slightly easier and warmer arriving back in Barnsley in time for Dek to have his Sunday dinner!! A special well done to Paul Ruta who coped admirably with the railway lines this week managing to stay upright!
October 30th Sunday
8 riders left town end on a cloudy mild morning for the flat run to Thorne. Good to see Gary Laight back, fresh from his African training camp!!
Light drizzle greeted us just after Barnburgh which made for slippery roads and railway lines as Paul Ruta found out as we approached Thorne. I've seen some good ways of getting off the front but throwing yourself on the railway track is top of the list. Nice one Paul hope your top comes clean!! Lunch was taken at the cafe where we were met by George Miles who told us he had "done a loop" from Barnby Dun 4 mile away, yeah right!! We set off for home in warm sunshine dropping George off for another cafe stop at Askern. On approaching Hooten Pagnell the club was joined by Pencil who had just about recovered from his hangover. He tucked in at the back for an easy ride home.
October 23rd
6 riders arrived at townend for the hilly ride to Castleton. We departed under grey cloud and gloomy conditions but Wayne assured us the sun was going to break out later on and it would be warmer on the way home! A slightly tough ride into a headwind to the cafe where lunch was taken (lovely tasting eggs) according to Gary T and Neil M agreed!! The return leg was made slighly easier with a tailwind but Dek and Neil M decided to make their ride slightly harder by taking a sharp left onto the Strines. The fab 4 carried on back down Rivelin doing a fantastic impression of "Team Pursuit"!! Waynes prediction of warmer weather came true with the sun breaking out, arriving back in Barnsley in bright sunshine.
October 16th
7 Riders left townend under grey skies on a cool morning bound for Howden. A reasonable pace was set with not a breath of wind. At Womersley Neil D turned back for home as he had to get his beauty sleep, ready for his night shift. Lunch was taken with the Barnsley war cry of "ar much"?? (not the cheapest cafe we've been to)!! Set off back home into a slight headwind but at Askern the sun broke out and we arrived back in Barnsley in warmer weather.

October 9th
Seven riders met at town end but there was an eery silence.... then someone realised that Zoe had not turned up!! Under dry, cloudy but warm conditions we departed for Eyam. Just after Worsbrough Mill Neil D punctured. A quick repair and we were soon back on our way. Arriving at Hillsborough roundabout the road was closed due to a running race so we had to take a slight detour through the backstreets. At this point Martin Dainty and Lee Dixon turned back for home as they had to get the puddings on!! At the bottom of Rivelin Mark S caught Pencils backwheel and down he went with an almighty thud. A quick once over and a few laughs later and we were soon back on our way. A tough ride to the cafe into a strong headwind and we were ready for our lunch. On the return leg home we arrived at Rivelin and the rain started. Neil D picked up yet another puncture at Hillsborough on his "puncture proof" tyres!! Arrived back in Barnsley, slightly damp but it had been an enjoyable and eventful clubrun.
October 2nd
Following last weeks "heatwave" 6 riders turned up at townend for the clubrun to Osgodby. In warm and muggy conditions they were met at Shafton by Rich Dean and Neil Dyson. After a brief cafe stop they departed for home into a slight headwind. At Wentbridge the sun came out and they arrived back in Barnsley in sunny conditions.

Hill Climb
Steve Roper was the only BRC rider to take part in the clubs annual hill climb. His winning time was 1min 59 seconds. Following this the club rode to Langsett Cafe.
September 18th
4 riders left townend for the ride to Clumber Gates. In warm and sunny conditions they arrived at the cafe in good time. Nice to see Neil Mountain back out.
September 11th
4 riders left townend in blustery conditions for the ride to Beckingham. Gary and Zoe turned back for home at Conisbrough due to a prior engagement. Dek and Wayne decided to go to Oldcotes instead of Beckingham
Yet again only 4 riders turned up at townend. It was decided to change the ride from Otley and instead go to Glossop, via Holme Moss. As we left townend it started to rain but at Ingbirchworth it had eased off. We arrived at the foot of Holme Moss with Wayne eager to test out the climb on his new carbon bike! At the top he said it was slightly easier but still "bloody hard"!! Lunch was taken at Glossop. A good tempo was set on the way home with Pencil (Jens Voigt) setting the pace up Woodhead. A good ride with plenty of hills. Riders were Pencil, Zoe, Dek and Wayne.

August 28th
Only 4 members met at townend for the club run to Edwinstowe. Club Captain and human sat nav, Dek was missing due to racing. The 4 members departed under sunny skies with a strong tail wind. This was whittled down to 3 at Conisbrough when Wayne Randall turned back for home as he was racing the next morning. Zoe, Gary and Gary Thawley carried on deciding to go to Clumber Gates instead of Edwinstowe. Lunch was taken in the Michellin Star Portacabin. The ride home was a tough one, smack into the strong headwind. Passing through Braithwell we stopped to watch a road race where we recognised Andrew the mountain goat riding his first ever road race which consisted of elites, 1st and 2nd cats.

August 21st
5 BRC members arrived at townend for the clubrun to Wroot. We departed under cloudy skies and a strong tailwind. Eventually the sun came out and we were riding in bright sunshine. Not far from the cafe we saw a few riders who were participating in the Yorkshire Cancer Charity ride. All ages, shapes and sizes, well done to them. Lunch was taken and we set off on the longer return leg into a strong headwind. Well done to Mark Summerfield who did 70+ miles after turning up straight off nights! Bet you have a good kip tonight Mark!!

Only 2 members turned up at townend for the club run to Sandtoft. Dek and Mark enjoyed a sunny ride out on the flatlands. Hopefully a few more will turn up this Sunday for another flat un to Market Weighton.

July 24th. Sunday - 150 miles in 12 hours
5 BRC riders met at town end for the earlier start of 07.30am. We departed under blue skies for our destination of Bridlington with our buckets and spades firmly strapped to our bikes. Into a slight head/side wind we made good time and was ready for the first stop of the day at The Harbour View Cafe, Bridlington. With 77 miles under our belts the beans on toast were eaten in record time. As we were about to depart Pencil suffered a severe heart attack but on further examination it was discovered to be nothing more than "heartburn" due to the bullet beans. Thawleys Chemist had an array of pills for his various complaints and offered Pencil a Rennie. Buckets and spades were discarded due to the cloudy and windy conditions. Zoe was disappointed not to get a donkey ride and had to settle for a long bike ride home instead. A day tripper did the honours with the customary team photo. The return leg was slightly easier with a tail/side wind. At Howden a quick splash n dash (as they say in F1) was taken for refreshments with Dave filling his pockets with an array of goodies. Another quick stop at Askern for fluids and we were quickly on our way again completing the 150 miles in a time of 7 hours 52 minutes (ride time) which gave us an average of 19mph. Well done everyone especially Wayne who raced in a 10 mile time trial the day before.
Riders were: Zoe Blackburn, Gary Barnes, Dave Lawrence, Gary Thawley, Wayne Randall

July 3rd. Sunday. Yet another scorcher! 6 riders departed from townend, this included Chris Francis from Team CF fresh from his Italian training camp. No sign of our Club Captain Dek the Destroyer today! We were met at Shafton roundabout by Planet X leg-ends Rich Dean and Wayne (The train) Randle and Matt Buckingham who has gone to the dark side and joined Team CF. Popular consensus is that you will grow into that shirt Matt!! Once again using the popular "through and off system" good pace was made to the cafe especially when it came to Waynes turn on the front!! A big sigh of relief when he turned off for Boroughbridge to watch his mate in a time trial. A longer route was taken adding a few extra miles on the outward leg. Lunch was taken at the side of the picturesque lake and we departed for home in soaring temperatures. Just after Newmillerdam we caught up Pete Welford who had rode out to meet us. Arrived back in Barnsley with another 100+ miles for everyone.
June 26th Sunday. Yippee at last a scorcher!! 6 BRC riders departed townend under sunny blue skies for the long ride to Messingham. With a slight side/tailwind and the well rehearsed through and off system now used by the clubrun, good time was made to the cafe. George M was sat at end end of the table waiting like the lord of the manor. Nice to have cold drinks with our lunch rather than needing to be warmed up by coffee. The return leg was slightly tougher into a side/headwind and increasing temperatures. A short stop off at Askern Cafe for yet more cold drinks and then we were on our way again after saying aurevoir to George. At Hampole Dave L managed to break a chain link with his awesome power! A quick repair job and we were soon on our way arriving back in Barnsley in brilliant sunshine and the tan lines well and truly topped up!
June 19th Sunday. 6 BRC riders met at townend and yes, you guessed it once again under grey clouds. We departed for Monyash into a block headwind, a testing outward leg to say the least. Arrived at Monyash at 11am under darkening clouds. Lunch was taken amongst mountain bikers, motorbikers and hikers. The return leg was a swift affair with a nice tailwind making the ascent of "Col de Froggatt" quite comfortable. The sun decided to show its face at Grenoside, typical!! Good hilly training in preparation for them little hills known as the Alp's!!
June 12th Sunday. On arrival at townend Club Captain, Dek (the weatherman) predicted heavy rain and winds around lunchtime so it was decided to do a shorter ride instead of the 90miles Storriths clubrun. This was great news to Mark S who had just turned up straight off the night shift!! So 6 BRC riders departed for Oldcotes via Bawtry and Blyth under sunny skies and into a strong breeze. As lunch was being taken the dark clouds started to form. A quick nudge to wake Mark up and we were on our journey home which was helped by a nice tail wind. We were met by the rain on Wombwell bypass. A good idea to change venue, well done Dek.
Members have decided that next weeks clubrun will be to Monyash, Derbyshire and not York Rally.

June 5th Sunday - 100 miles in 8 hours
8 BRC members met at townend excited at the prospect of the 100 in 8! We departed under grey skies and into a north easterly wind. We were joined at Shafton roundabout once again by Planet X leg-ends Rich Dean and Matt Buckingham. A tough but enjoyable ride was had to the cafe at Allerthorpe with everyone taking their turn at the front with only a brief stop for Matt to mend his puncture. With 52 miles on the clock at the cafe everyone was ready for their lunch with Rich deciding that the chocolate cake looked better on his undervest than in his mouth!! (mucky pup)! Photographer to the Stars Rich Dean was sacked from his position as he would only take topless photos and only Zoe would oblige!! His understudy, Matt, stepped in and did a fine job. We then departed for the return leg in sunshine and a nice tailwind. A quick toilet stop at Askern was taken and then we were back on our way. Approaching Shafton Zoe launched a blistering attack taking the Shafton sign with ease from Rich Dean who used the old excuse "I didn't know there was a sign there"!! Yeah right!! The 100 mile mark was reached in 5 hours and 8 minutes with an average speed of just under 20mph. Well done everyone.
Riders were: Gary Barnes, Zoe Blackburn, Neil Dyson, Derek Crawshaw, Gary Thawley, Wayne Randall, Mark Summerfield, Dave Lawrence and guest riders Rich Dean and Matt Buckingham.

May 29th Sunday. Yet again strong winds forced the change of venue for the 6 riders that left townend. It was decided because of the strong winds to give Monyash in Derbyshire a miss. Instead the club went to new tried and tested cafe Too Hoots near Snaith. On the way home Wayne "The Pump" Randall punctured but it didn't take long for the club to get on their way home again. Rain held off and another character building ride was had!!
Next week don't forget it's the second big club event of the year - 100mile in 8 hours.
Next week don't forget it's the second big club event of the year - 100mile in 8 hours.
May 22nd Sunday. Showers and gale force winds put most members off the club run today as only 4 hardy's turned up at townend. They enjoyed a strong tailwind out and the occasional shower on their way to Tadcaster. Alan C had a puncture on the way out. As they arrived at Sherburn in Elmet they could see that Tadcaster was shrouded in darkness so decided to change venue and go to the motorbikers cafe at Sherburn. Strong headwind on the way back with more showers and yet another puncture from Alan C!! Well done lads.
May 15th Sunday. 10 riders left townend on a cool, windy and cloudy morning for the ride to Misterton. Back from 2 months of heavy petting with his new girlfriend was Alan Charlesworth. You can still get your leg over on a Sunday Al, but over ya bike! Also out again was new member Lee Thorterson. With the aid of a strong tailwind we all departed for Misterton, Lee turning back at Conisbrough. Arrived at Cafe in good time where lunch was taken. The ride back was a different story with the wind in our faces all the way back to Barnsley accompanied by abit of light rain at Bawtry.
May 8th Sunday. 6 riders left townend for the hilly ride to Bakewell including a new rider (name unknown) who turned back at Hillsborough. Headwind on way out but kept dry. Brisk ride back with all riders home around 1.30pm.
May 1st Sunday. 10 riders left townend at the earlier time of 8.30am including racing secretary Steve Roper. With clear blue skies and a cool strong headwind we set off for the new destination of Two Hoots Cafe at Carlton, Selby. Once again new rider Lloyd rode as far as Hemsworth where he turned round and headed for home. The club domestiques did their utmost to shelter their racing secretary to keep him out of harms way ready for Thursdays first evening club event. On the Sykehouse road Steve turned back for home as he had a leg waxing appointment!! The club carried on into the headwind to the end of Sykehouse turning back towards Snaith with a lovely tailwind where they were met by George at the cafe. The ride home was a brisk affair in lovely sunshine and strong tail/side wind. At one point Gary Laight suffered a severe nose bleed as he ventured too close to the front! George cunningly snuck a loop on which enabled him to have a wheel all the way to Kirk Smeaton before turning off (crafty old bugger)!! Arrived back in Barnsley in bright sunshine.
April 24th Sunday. 7 riders left townend on a dull but warm morning. Members were met at townend by Lloyd from Mapplewell complete with brand new Giant carbon bike. As this was his first ever ride on a road bike he rode with us until Wakefield where he sensibly turned back for home. Good start Lloyd. The sun came out just after Seacroft and the roads were very quiet due to the Bank Holiday and many shops being shut, wish it was always like this. The peleton was at "full steam" (15mph)!! when it came to an abrupt halt due to Zoe puncturing. After a very fast pit stop we then carried on 100 yards where we had a p**s stop (too many weak bladders in BRC)!! Arrived at cafe where lunch was taken amongst the Hells Angels convention (interesting to say the least)!! Ride home was in bright sunshine. Arrived back in Barnsley with plenty of time to top up the tan yet again.
April 17th Sunday. 8 riders left townend on a bright sunny morning including Andrew who was back to full fitness after a recent chest infection. George was picked up en route a few miles from the Cafe where luckily it was warm enough to sit outside and enjoy the picturesque views! The pace home was brisk to say the least with Martin D "on fire" after his recent South of France training camp!! At Oldcotes we spotted a BRC member coming towards us and it was none other than Pete Welford, who tagged on the back. Good to see ya Pete!! Dave the train took over the reins from Paul Ruta on the Manvers bypass, apparantely to "test his legs out" for his first event next week and the general opinion was that there's "nowt up wi em"! All arrived back in Barnsley safely and in good time to once again enjoy the sunny weather.
April 10th. Sunday. Only 5 riders left townend under bright blue skies (other members must have been washing their cars, mowing their grass....) for the ride to Wetherby. They were joined en route at Cundy Cross by the late arrival of Dave Lawrence who was lathered head to toe in Fabian Cancellara Saxobank kit. He said he couldn't drag himself away from the mirror! After leaving Pontefract the pace picked up and all arrived at the cafe in good time. Neil Mountain carried straight on home his head still vibrating from the cobbles the week before. On the return leg riders were strung out with Pencil on the front, fresh from his Mallorcan training camp (with Zoe) adding a few more miles to their total of 534 miles in 6 days. Arrived back in Barnsley in time for a spot of sunbathing in this lovely sunny weather.
April 3rd. Sunday. A stiff westerly wind faced the riders on their trip to Hebden Bridge, although it kept fine. Going over Elland bypass it got rather drafty, but nowt that the `Road Club can`t handle. It was a little bit damp coming back around the Flockton area but it didn`t spoil an enjoyable 64mile round trip. Planet X were missing this week - was it too hilly ?
March 27th Sunday. A dry cool cloudy morning for the start of the 50 in 4 from Town End. 12 riders departed Barnsley and the ranks swelled to 14 when the club were joined en route at Cudef Bridge by Planet X leg-ends Rich Dean and Matt Buckingham. We sent them to the back of the BRC peleton as we didn't want the pace to drop ha ha!! Into a slight headwind we headed towards Pollington, Snaith and then onto Sykehouse where Martin Dainty got abit giddy upping the pace. Pencil bided his time in the bunch and got the Askern sign with an impressive solo attack coming from the rear (50 yard dash)!! Arrived at a newly refurbished cafe where we were met by Mr BRC himself George Miles. George had misread the clubruns list and had done his own version of 4 miles in 50 hours!! Well done fella!! The road club made short work of the chocolate cake that was on sale with Dave stating that he "felt sick"!! (Mind you he had been on the ale the night before)!! After a brief photo shoot by guest photographer to the stars Mr Richard Dean we then set off on our way home reaching the 50 mile mark in 2hours and 42 minutes just over 19mph average. Well done guys and gal!!
Club riders who completed 50 in 4 were: Gary Barnes, Zoe Blackburn, Derek Crawshaw, Gary Laight, Neil Mountain, Gary Thawley, Paul Ruta, Dave Lawrence, Wayne Randall, Mark Summerfield, Neil Dyson and Martin Dainty.

March 20th Sunday. A dry, cool cloudy morning greeted 8 riders at Town End for the clubrun to Glossop. A few miles past Ladybower, on Snake Pass the weather turned to drizzle, then rain, so we all donned our Altura Pocket Rockets for the fast descent into Glossop. Wayne flew down, rain didn't put him off descending like a stone, others took more care in the wet conditions. 8 riders arrived at Cafe with 7 of them putting their bikes on ebay and Dave chucking his in the skip, fed up with wet weather, BUT "Dec the Weatherman" predicted sunshine up Woodhead and he was spot on!! He is now doing lottery predictions for a small fee. On descent from Woodhead, Dave got speed wobble on clocking 59mph!! Arrived back in Barnsley in bright sunshine, rain forgotton. Now boys and girls don't forget next week is BRC's first BIG event of the season, yep it's the 50 in 4 hours don't forget your £1. Meet Town End 9.00am (even if it's raining Neil M)!!
March 13th. Sunday. A very wet morning but 7 riders still turned up for the club run to Osgodby. At Darrington the group was reduced to 5 riders with Gary and Zoe turning back for home with trench foot and hypothermia! The hardy 5 carried on with the rain clouds chasing them all the way to cafe. They dried out for the return leg and rode home in sunshine. Well done lads. Glossop this Sunday, only 3 hills, Rivelin, Snake Pass and Woodhead. 9.00am start, town end. Are you up for it George!!
March 6th. Sunday. A dry, cool, cloudy morning saw 8 riders set off for Edale. This was the 1st run at the new time of 9-00am, was that the reason a few were missing ? A comfortable ride followed through to Rivelin were Gawber Steve turned back (did he smell the Yorkshire puddings burning ?). After dinner the ride home was in lovely sunshine although there was a cool headwind blowing. Another very enjoyable day out. Next Sunday, don`t forget 9-00am for Osgodby, a flat run.
Feb 27th. Sunday. 16 out today, where to - WETLANDS of course. Wetlands at Lound near Retford. It started to rain on leaving Barnsley & rained all the way to Lound. 11 of the 16 riders decided to keep going as they were wet through and returned to Barnsley, it fined up around Mexbro area. Gawber Mark was out again, this time with clipless pedals & shoes, Mark tried to do a track stand at Conisbro but failed & hit the tarmac. (Tip :- don`t have the tension on LH pedal too tight, slacken it off a bit so you can get your foot out). Also out again was Steve, he rode as far as Rivelin about 3 weeks since, good to have you with us Steve. The 5 were joined at Lound by George and all 6 had a soggy ride home.
Feb 20th. Sunday. A good day out, lots of hiils but wintery weather on the way to Marsden. 12 out this week including newcomer Mark from Gawber on his new bike which he only got last week. The hills took their toll on Mark and he faded a little nearing Marsden. Slow service at the cafe gave the opportunity for the 2 Gary`s + Mark to get a start on the Club, Mark must have done OK as the Club didn`t catch them up. Well done Mark, don`t let a good start slip, come again next week when it`s a lot easier run to Lound near Reford when Mark S promised me he was turning out.
Feb 13th. Sunday. A differant 8 out this week, with the run to Lotherton Hall not far from Sherburn-in-Elmet. Weather conditions pretty good - cloudy but fine and a tailwind. The hammer went down with 10miles to go (28mph) but Dek knew everyone out could cope with that sort of pace. Lotherton Hall was once the family home of the Gascoigne`s but is now owned by Leeds City Council with a bird garden thats well worth a visit. Headwind home, Andy P, now a regular, got on the front with Martin D and a brisk pace was set, not brisk enough though because by Royston the rain came and it was a soggy end to the day.
Feb 6th. Sunday, 8 made their way to Calver in Derbyshire, into a very strong, blustery headwind. Halfway up Rivelin they caught `Stella`, he`d set of in front of the Club knowing they would catch him. Andy Ph. the `Mexbro mountain goat` was out for 2nd time - he loves hills. Coming back up Froggatt wasn`t too bad cos of the strong back wind. A tough but enjoyable days ride. At the start a passing rider stopped at Townend & asked where the Club was going, he rode with the Club to the bottom of Rivelin, if you was that rider please come along again, anytime, you`re very welcome. George M went to the last N.M.C.F. dinner & prize presentation. This concluded the affairs of the Federation.
Jan 30th. Sunday. a cold raw day with very little wind. 13 set off to Bawtry but en-route decided to go to Oldcotes instead. It was felt that the cafe at Bawtry would be too small. (There are now 2 cafes in Bawtry !) Stella turned out again - you can`t get rid of a good lad that easily. On the way home Dave got a slow puncture but some quick inflations saw him back to Birdwell OK.
Jan 23rd. Sunday, a nice mild 6 degrees & fine as well. Rothwell near Leeds the destination. 14 riders made the trip including Andrew Phiri from Mexbro (he`s been after coming out with BRC for over a month now - glad you made it at last Andy). Andy coped well with the pace into a headwind, not so fortunate was `Stella`. He joined the run after Townend & only lasted 2 miles before getting dropped. NOT GOOD. Most of those on the run didn`t even know Stella had been out. A nice tail wind blew the Club back to Barnsley.
Jan 16th. Sunday, a very damp day didn`t deter 11 riders from going to Hope in Derbyshire. A headwind and drizzle made sure that when they got to the cafe they were all wet through. However a roaring log fire soon dried them out ready for the trip back to Barnsley with a back wind but accompanied by more drizzle then rain.
Jan 9th. Sunday, Cold with a strong SW wind, ice in the puddles at side of the road. It blew 9 to Askern, unfortunate new guy John, cut it short when his rear mech disintegrated. Come again when its fixed John. George put in an appearance, he had a back wind home while the Club had it in their faces.
Jan 2nd. Sunday, Oldcotes in N.Notts, took till Conisbro to warm up but still a lot better day than the last few weeks. 8 riders turned out including `Tarka`, it`s a few years since he last came out, well done fella. Head wind home meant they soon got warmed up on the return leg.
